Reinvigorated an arts fundraiser and raised over $1 million to fight AIDS.

AIDS Action’s 25-year-old HIV/AIDS fundraiser ARTcetera needed a reboot. As part of the team, I rebranded the event, directed a portrait shoot of AIDS Action’s amazing team, and designed all collateral.

Inspired by an enduring legacy

The fight against AIDS began in the early 80s, was led by the queer community it impacted, and was scrappy. I wanted to channel this aesthetic as a way to stimulate our audiences’ memory and sense of urgency.

Milton Glaser’s typeface Glaser Stencil met three key criteria: 1. Published in 1970, it was in widespread use during the early 80s; 2. Being a stencil font, it embodied scrappiness, and; 3. Though it’s a stencil, it’s forms were refined and geometric, bridging the gap between scrappy and well-executed (our goal, after all, was to raise money).
